Visceral and Obstetric Osteopathy Caroline A Stone Visceral osteopathy is a method of exploring those tensions of the body body that reside within the organs and associated tissues, with the aim of improving overall movement, lessening any barriers to better function and allowing the bodies own self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms to function more optimally. Visceral Osteopathy is: 1) The three dimensional dynamics of body biomechanics 2) Reflex activity in the central and peripheral nervous systems 3) Neuro-emotional immune links 4) Effective circulation and drainage of all the body fluid systems and tissues. Somatic dysfunction is a state in the tissues that can ultimately influence visceral and vascular function, and hence homeostasis, immunity and health. The state of the nervous system induced by this somatic dysfunction is called a facilitated segment. Somatic dysfunction is considered by osteopaths to be partly aetiological to pathological change and development of disease in segmentally related organs. These are called Somatovisceral reflexes. Viscerosomatic reflexes are when the spinal soft tissue and articulatory changes are considered indicators of visceral disease, and are thus objective signs of underlying visceral dysfunction. The unifying factor between viscerosomatic and somatovisceral reflexes is that they are both thought to be perverted version of normal spinal reflex phenomena.
